Health and Safety in the Workplace
Level 2
This Level 2 qualification is designed to provide candidates with
fundamental knowledge and understanding of health and safety at
work and the procedures that are required to be in place for
managing risks and dealing with accidents and ill health.
Summary of Outcomes:
To achieve this qualification a
candidate must:
Understand roles and
responsibilities for health, safety and welfare in the workplace,
by being able to:
Outline employers’ and employees’ duties relating to health,
safety and welfare at work
Outline the consequences of non-compliance with health and safety
legislation
Outline the requirements for training and competence in the
workplace
Outline the ways in which health and safety information can be
communicated.
Understand how risk assessments
contribute to health and safety, by being able to:
Define the terms ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’
Outline the process for carrying out a risk assessment
Describe how risk assessment can be used to reduce accidents and
ill-health at work
Understand how to identify and
control the risks from common workplace hazards, by being able to:
Describe the hazards that may be found in a range of workplaces
Describe how hazards can cause harm or damage to people, work
processes, the workplace and the environment
Describe the principles of the risk control hierarchy
List examples of risk controls for common workplace hazards
Know the procedures for responding
to accidents and incidents in the workplace, by being able to:
State the common causes of workplace accidents and ill health
Identify the actions that might need to be taken following an
incident in the workplace
List the arrangements that should be in place in a workplace for
emergencies and first aid
Outline why it is important to record all incidents, accidents and
ill
health.
Level 3 Award in Health and Safety for Supervisors in the
Workplace
This qualification is aimed at supervisors who are required to
ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation.
Summary of Outcomes:
To achieve this unit a candidate must:
Discuss the importance of supervision with regard to Health and
Safety in the workplace, by being able to: Discuss the role of the
supervisor.
Evaluate hazards and risks in the workplace and their possible
effects, by being able to: Discuss hazards and risks relating to
the environment of the workplace and their appropriate controls
Discuss hazards and risks relating to work equipment and their
appropriate controls
Discuss hazards and risks relating to fire and electricity in the
workplace and their appropriate controls
Determine hazards and risks likely to affect the occupational
health of individuals, by being able to:
Assess the risks due to substances hazardous to health and their
appropriate controls
Explain hazards and risks due to manual handling and methods for
reducing these risks
Evaluate the effect of noise and stress at work and methods for
controlling this.
