Health and Safety at Work Level 1
The Level 1 Award is for employees from any work background and UK
based schools, colleges and other organisations working with young
people in full-time education.
The qualification at a glance
The qualification pre-supposes no former knowledge on the part of
the candidate. Candidates will come from diverse educational and
work experience backgrounds and could work for employers ranging
from large multinationals to small businesses. Candidates may also
be unemployed.
The qualification is also approved under Section 96 of the
Learning and Skills Act 2000 for learners aged 18 and under.
The Level 1 Award sits within the Qualifications and Credit
Framework (QCF) and replaces the Level 1
Objectives
The aim of the qualification is to provide candidates with a basic
knowledge of health and safety in the workplace, including the
duties of employees and employers under UK health and safety
legislation.
Candidates will learn how their actions contribute to health and
safety in the workplace and gain a clear understanding of their
responsibilities to others.

Safety Signs and Signals
Manual Handling
The Level 1 Certificate is assessed by a one-hour examination
comprising 40 multiple-choice questions, which sample the learning
outcomes above.
All marking is done by the British Safety Council. Results and
certificates are issued within five working days.
